The Post Partum Blues, A Forgotten Terminology

When the levels of oxytocin in the mother are high there is a significant drop in the post- delivery depression – scientific article

Oxytocin & post- partum depression

Plasma Oxytocin Concentration during Pregnancy is associated with Development of Postpartum Depression – A study

Postpartum depression (PPD) affects up to 19% of all women after parturition.

To our knowledge, this is the first study to show an association between prepartum plasma OXT concentration and postpartum symptoms of PPD in humans.

Assuming a causal relationship, enhancing OXT release during pregnancy could serve as a potential target in prepartum PPD prevention, and help to minimize adverse effects of PPD on the mother–child relationship.

High pregnancy anxiety during mid-gestation is associated with decreased gray matter density in 6-9 year-old children
This is the first prospective study to show that a specific temporal pattern of pregnancy anxiety is related to specific changes in brain morphology. Altered gray matter volume in brain regions affected by prenatal maternal anxiety may render the developing individual more vulnerable to neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders as well as cognitive and intellectual impairment.
